In Memory of Steven

July 20, 1997 - July 29, 2023

Steven's Life

Steven was born on July 20, 1997 in Arlington, Massachusetts, where he spent his formative years until the age of 25. His journey into the great outdoors commenced amidst the enchanting landscapes of Sandwich, New Hampshire – a cherished family retreat during the summers. Alongside his sisters Cady, Sammie, and Ruby, Steven reveled in capturing the allure of toads, salamanders, and snakes, embarking on spirited hikes through the majestic White Mountains, enjoying the crystal waters of picturesque Squam Lake and playing baseball with cherished summer companions. Guided by his loving parents, Mary and Bruce, he imbibed a deep-seated passion for nature from a tender age.

His academic pursuits led him to attain a degree in mechanical engineering from the esteemed Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester, Massachusetts. During his time at WPI, Steven's affinity for outdoor pursuits flourished within the college's climbing club, unveiling an extraordinary talent and a profound connection to outdoor sports. It was here that Steven truly unearthed the essence of his identity, a revelation that would eventually steer him towards conquering the world's most formidable and awe-inspiring peaks.

This quest for self-discovery eventually led him to the sun-kissed landscapes of California's bay area. Rapidly assimilating into the vibrant climbing community, Steven's weekends were devoted to the exploration of California's breathtaking natural wonders. His intrepid spirit and unquenchable thirst for adventure made him a revered figure in this realm.

Tragically, Steven's life was cut short in a fateful incident while descending Tenaya Peak within the revered expanse of Yosemite National Park. This unfortunate event transpired following a triumphant and exhilarating ascent. Despite this heartrending loss, we derive solace from the belief that Steven departed this world ensnared in the euphoric embrace of Yosemite's profound beauty. His essence will forever reverberate within the park's intricate ecosystems, an enduring tribute to his unwavering spirit.

Steven was a paragon of kindness, exuding a benevolence that touched the lives of all who were fortunate to know him. His audacious courage defied conventional understanding, and his intellectual prowess was akin to the brilliance of a star. As time marches on, the love and longing we feel for him shall remain an indelible presence in our hearts, an enduring testament to a life that burned brightly and was extinguished far too soon.
